Bob Veale, a gifted pitcher, passed away after a lifetime of success. He was eighty-nine.

Veale passed away on January 7, the Pittsburgh Pirates confirmed in a news release. It is still unknown what caused his death.

Veale helped the Pittsburgh Pirates reach and win the World Series in 1971 when he was a member of the team from 1962 to 1972. Veale was commended by Pittsburgh Pirates chairman Bob Nutting in a press statement.

According to Nutting, Bob was a key player for the Pirates who helped our club win the 1971 World Series and consecutive division titles. During his incredible big league career, which he proudly spent much of with the Pirates, he was one of the most dominant left-handed pitchers in all of Major League Baseball. He will be missed; he was a wonderful man.

According to the Pirates website, Veale’s record with the team starts with a 116-91 record, 3.06 ERA (1868.2ip/636er), and 1652 strikeouts in 341 appearances (255 starts).

Veale led the National League in 1964 with 250 strikeouts, according to the Pirates. He joined players like Rube Waddell in 1990 and Preacher Roe in 1945 as the third pitcher in the team’s history to lead the league in strikeouts.

Veale also spent two years, from 1972 to 1974, playing with the Boston Red Sox. He played his final game on September 8, 1974.

Veale passed away with his family in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, according to the MLB.
