Matthew Wright, a former Pittsburgh Steelerskicker, helped the Chiefs defeat the Los Angeles Chargers once more and secure the AFC West. During the day, Wright went four of four, including the game-winning kick that went in after doinking off the left upright to upset the Chargers 19–17.
A week prior, Wright had done the same against the Las Vegas Raiders, giving the Chiefs the push they needed to win with a game-winning kick in the fourth quarter.
This is the 26-year-old’s second tenure with the Chiefs; his first was in 2021. He has been a journeyman kicker. Wright, a UCF kicker who was not selected in the draft, has been brought in by the Steelers on several occasions for training camp. Since the Steelers have altered Boswell’s training regimen to ensure his body is in top condition, he assisted kicker Chris Boswell in having a lower workload this summer.
Due to injuries to kickers Harrison Butker and Spencer Shrader, who are both on injured reserve, Wright is with the Chiefs.
