Rex Ryan, a former NFL head coach, says that Russell Wilson is mostly to blame for the Steelers’ defeat and that the team cannot run the ball effectively with Wilson at quarterback. Ryan thinks that the Steelers may need to panic and that they may strengthen their case by moving to Justin Fields.
“You ought to be in a panic. Their record does not reflect their true abilities. They really aren’t, after all. Don’t get me wrong, Tomlin is an excellent coach, but ever since Russ took over, I’ve never been a bigger fan of Justin Fields. Because of Russ’s influence on the rushing game, they are now utterly terrible at running the football, Ryan remarked.
Even if the Steelers wanted to make that trade, there would be a problem because Fields is coping with an abdominal injury. Wilson has performed admirably, though, and the difference in rushing yards per game is only eight yards, with Fields in there having a marginally higher rushing success rate.
But the passing game does not compensate for that. Wilson has enabled the passing game to take on more explosive plays and launch, whereas Fields’ passing game had trouble getting off the ground completely.
