The city of PhiladelphiaBritain Covey might return for Sunday’s NFC Championship game at Lincoln Financial Field when the Eagles take on the Washington Commander.

For the first time since sustaining a neck injury during the team’s Week 13 victory over the Ravens in Baltimore, the wide receiver and punt returner returned to the practice field on Wednesday. Prior to the Eagles’ Week 18 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, he was placed on injured reserve after missing three consecutive games despite being a full participant in practice for four weeks.

The organization said on Wednesday that it had expanded Covey’s 21-day practice window for a comeback, despite the fact that he has been out of commission for the first two rounds of the playoffs. Naturally, there are still 21 games left in the season, but the Eagles clearly think Covey has a chance to return for either Sunday’s game against the Commanders or, if the Eagles are the NFC representative, the Super Bowl on February 9.

The Eagles would benefit from Covey’s presence in one very specific way. He returns punts when he’s active, which frees up rookie cornerback Cooper DeJeanto to concentrate on playing defense. However, due to injuries, Covey has only played in eight games this season. Earlier in the season, he missed seven games due to a fractured scapula.

Covey led the league in punt return yards last season (417), but this season he has only returned six punts for 46 yards. During the regular season, DeJean returned 21 punts for 211 yards while he was out, and in the Eagles’ two postseason games, he returned five for 16 yards.

The Eagles added offensive lineman Cameron Erving and tight end Nick Muse to the practice squad in addition to opening Covey’s practice window. Defensive end KJ Henry was cut from the practice squad.
