Following injuries sustained in a four-vehicle collision on state Route 94 in Berwick Township, Adams County, this month, former Gettysburg Middle School Principal Steven P. Littenhas passed away.

Litten, 69, passed away on December 3 at Wellspan York Hospital from blunt force trauma, according to York County Coroner Pamela Gay.

Litten was hurt when another motorist over the center line and entered his direction of travel close to the intersection with Hershey Heights Road, hitting his car head-on. Both of those vehicles spun out of control and collided with two additional vehicles in the initial collision, which was reported at 5:39 p.m. on November 19.

Only Litten’s injuries were thought to be life-threatening, although five people were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The Evening Sun of Hanover reported that three of the cars were disabled and needed to be hauled away. The area’s roads were closed for almost six hours until they were reopened to traffic.

After 16 years, Litten retired from his position as principal of Gettysburg Middle School in 2012. He said that he was departing at the time because he had the chance to pursue a second career by buying a Lawn Doctor franchise that served Adams and Franklin counties.

Litten, a native of York County, returned to the area from Missouri in 1996 to take the middle school position. Litten lived on the first block of North Steeplechase in Gettysburg. Litten had previously been the athletic director of the Dover School District at one point in his career.
