Whole fresh American cucumbers of all sizes have been recalled by SunFed Produce.
The company announced the recall of the vegetables on November 27 because of a potential salmonella infection. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are susceptible to severe and occasionally fatal infections from salmonella.
According to the statement, healthy people who contract salmonella frequently have fever, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea (which can be bloody), and stomach pain. Rarely, a salmonella infection can cause the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious conditions such arthritis, endocarditis, and arterial infections (also known as infected aneurysms). Salmonellosis symptoms often appear six hours to six days after infection and persist for four to seven days.
All cucumber sizes that were packaged in bulk cardboard containers bearing the SunFed mark, or in a generic white box or black plastic crate bearing a sticker identifying the involved producer as Agrotato, S.A. de C.V., are subject to the recall.

This recall affects citizens of Pennsylvania as well as more than a dozen other states and Canadian regions.
The Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, as well as the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin, are also impacted.
According to the press release, the cucumbers would have been distributed to customers via retail and food service establishments that might have been in states not on this list. Following notification from the Food and Drug Administration that the cucumbers mentioned above were linked to salmonellosis cases that were recorded between October 12 and November 15, SunFed started this recall.
Regarding the recall, SunFed is also attempting to get in touch with direct purchasers. This recall did not affect any other SunFed products. Following the recall, SunFed and the FDA issued customers instructions on how to handle the vegetables.
