ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — In the 49ers’ 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night, Christian McCaffrey, the running back, sustained a knee injury that coach Kyle Shanahan said could terminate his season.
According to Shanahan, McCaffrey is thought to have suffered damage to his posterior cruciate ligament, which joins the shin and thigh bones. He conceded that the All-Pro season might be ended, but he did not provide a timeline for McCaffrey’s comeback.
I haven’t been certain yet. Shanahan stated, “I’m not exactly sure yet, but I think PCL is usually a couple weeks.”
The 2023 offensive player of the year, who missed the Niners’ first eight games due to Achilles tendinitis and hasn’t been his typical explosive self since returning, has suffered yet another setback in a difficult season.
On a snow-covered field, McCaffrey took an odd step on a sweep to the left and was taken down nearly instantly for a 5-yard loss. After being checked out in the medical tent on the sidelines, he hobbled over to the locker room. Prior to the third quarter beginning, the Niners declared he would not be coming back.
Before getting hurt, McCaffrey had seven carries for 53 yards and two catches for 14 yards. His 19-yard rush in the first quarter was his longest of the season.
Additionally, defensive tackle Kevin Givens was sidelined by San Francisco due to a chest injury, and linebacker Fred Warner briefly left the game due to cramping before coming back.
