In York County, ADollar General is relocating to a former Rite Aid location.

The shop is moving to 105 Old York Road in Fairview Township from 99 Lewisberry Road.

It is anticipated that the Dollar General will open in the spring at the location of the former Rite Aid shop.

In December 2023, Rite Aid made the announcement that this specific location would close.

Following Rite Aid’s store closures in 2023 and last year, hundreds of its former locations remain empty on the East Coast.

Dollar General will open in Silver Spring Township at 7036 Wertzville Road, a former Rite Aid shop, in addition to its Fairview Township branch.

With over 20,000 locations throughout 48 states, Dollar General offers a wide range of products, including food, snacks, cleaning supplies, basic clothing, housewares, seasonal goods, and paper goods.

Rite Aid, a Philadelphia-based company that had spent decades operating out of East Pennsboro Township, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023. The business’s financial restructuring was finished in September 2024, and it emerged as a private company from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In 2017, the pharmacy retailer has over 4,600 locations.It sold 2,186 locations to Walgreens that year, most of which were in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast regions of the US.

Rite Aid had more than 2,100 locations when it declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023. Rite Aid announced the closure of about 813 stores by the time company was out of bankruptcy, including three in York County and 80 in Pennsylvania.
