For the second consecutive season, the Boyertown wrestling team hosted a District 3 visitor on Tuesday night for an early-round match of the PIAA Team Championships.
This season, the Bears overcame District 3 runner-up Chambersburg 41–20 to advance in the PIAA Class 3A Duals.
Boyertown lost to Central Dauphin 31–25 in the first round a year ago. CD finished just a victory away from first place.
Boyertown is guaranteed a trip to Altoona High School for the finals of the PIAA Duals this Friday and Saturday.
On Tuesday, Central Mountain, which defeated Shikellamy 29–28, will play the District 1 champs.
After losing to Gettysburg in the district final last Saturday, Chambersburg, the runners-up in District 3, saw strong performances from their big hitters. However, Boyertown’s depth won out.
Key games were won by the Trojans’ Zach Sherman (29-6), Ashton Romberger (27-8), and Jacob Stoner (23-10).
Stoner defeated Josh Larrimore (25-10), 7-6 at 189; Romberger defeated Beck Babb (28-11), 5-4 at 139; and Sherman (C) defeated Brody Coleman (32-8), 8-3 at 127.
Issac Brambley of the Trojans and Boden Waite of the Bears exchanged pins before Boyertown took over with a pin from Brody Tobias.
A 17–12 lead was extended into a 36–12 margin after a four-match surge that included pins from Shane Stankina (145), Owen Dykie (152), Carter Stouch (160), and Jonathan Heiser (172).
