With a trip to the PIAA Team Championships on the line, the Bubblers, the Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division champions, had to bounce back from a tough loss to Gettysburg in the semifinals to play Northern, the winner of the Keystone Division, in the consolation round.

Boiling Springs defeated the Polar Bears 35-27 after winning the last four fights of the tournament. They will now face ELCO, which defeated Conestoga Valley in the other consolation match at Spring Grove High School, for third place on Saturday.

The state team tournament tickets were punched by the top four finishers in D3 3A, which included Boiling Springs and ELCO in the third-place match and Gettysburg and Chambersburg in Saturday’s final.

In the last four games, the Bubblers secured the victory with 13 team points.

Chase Evans gave Braylon Barrick a big decision at 107, and Cody Schaffer pinned Jorge Castillo at 285 to give the Bubblers the lead.

In the last fight, Alex Mentzer decided Tristin Cruz to win by decision, but Northern required a pin to win.

According to Kyle Dayhoff, head coach of Boiling Springs, “we preached from yesterday that we needed one win.” In the locker room, we stated that we needed one victory and that everything was still zero-zero.

When we defeated West Perry, our players made a statement. On Tuesday, our team made a statement by winning both of those games. This tournament’s first three duals have been difficult; in the first three, we lost the coin toss.

According to Dayhoff, the coin flip is important in these games. If we had won the coin toss, it would have been a different match, but I’m not suggesting we would have defeated Gettysburg.

Boiling Springs’ season record is 18-3. Northern is 17-3 at the end of their dual meet season.

Tonight, three of our starters were out. According to Northern head coach Cory Johnson, whose Polar Bears departed Spring Grove on Thursday night for a tournament in West Virginia, “I’m proud of what our kids did this year.”
