The Big Ten is punishing the Michigan and Ohio State football teams for their altercation after Saturday’s game.
A day after law officials deployed pepper spray to help break up many skirmishes on the field at Ohio Stadium after the Wolverines’ 13-10 victory, the league administration sought to sanction both schools $100,000 apiece for breaking the conference’s sportsmanship code.
According to a statement from the Big Ten office, the incident’s nature not only compromised the safety of players and spectators, but also violated basic aspects of sportsmanship including decency and respect.
Players from both teams were involved in the incident, which was broadcast live on FOX as the annual rivalry game was coming to an end. Some OSU players charged the scene and retaliated after Michigan players drove the school’s blue flag and maize into the middle of the field.

Police officers from both sides, many of whom were already on the field, became involved in the pandemonium by rushing into the middle of it all, using mace, and spraying players, staff, and some members of the media. The police department at Ohio State University later indicated in a statement that it will keep looking into the matter.
Michigan, meanwhile, seems unfazed by it all. The Wolverines told reporters that there were strong feelings on both sides during the game as they celebrated winning the rivalry for the fourth time in a row. Michigan was fighting for bragging rights, while Ohio State needed the win to advance to the Big Ten championship game.
Michigan coach Sherrone Moore stated, “Our guys had the flag and guys were waving it around and their guys charged up.” It is not possible. This is a very heated rivalry game. It is the largest in the nation. We must therefore manage it more effectively.
The Big Ten indicated in the statement that it views this issue as resolved and would not be commenting further.
