WASHINGTON (AP) — On Sunday, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harrison praised wealthy Democratic donors who contributed record amounts during the party’s election defeat to President-elect Donald Trump. They also encouraged them to be involved in politics and not give up.
In their remarks at the Democratic National Committee holiday reception, Biden, Harris, and their spouses attempted to bolster important contributors who the Democratic Party needs to remain loyal to while it attempts to rebuild. In an election where donors of all political persuasions spent over $4.7 billion, Republicans easily won the White House and Senate while holding onto control of the House.
All of us are knocked down. “When you’re knocked down, you just have to get back up,” Biden recalled his father saying. How quickly someone or a group gets back up is a good indicator of them.
Harris, who replaced Biden as the party’s presidential contender after the latter’s dismal debate performance in July, thanked contributors for investing their time and money in supporting her and Democrats they supported.
Approximately $2.9 billion was raised by Democrats, their affiliated super PACs, and other organizations, while the Republicans raised roughly $1.8 billion. Harris pointed out that the Democratic finance committee’s 700 events generated an astounding $700 million for Democrats.
Harris added, “You rallied, you opened your homes, you reached out to your friends and your family.” She will soon start seriously considering her own future and whether to run for president again. Because you care so much, you invested your personal capital—that is, your relationships—in talking to people. You engaged with them and took the time to remind them of the issues at hand.
Biden said Democrats should be proud of what they achieved, even if he acknowledged the pain they still feel from last month’s defeat.
A $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act to increase U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, and an increase in federal environmental spending through the Inflation Reduction Act—which Biden signed into law in 2022 after it passed Congress only with Democratic votes—are among the administration’s signature accomplishments.
Without you, we couldn’t have accomplished as much as we did, Biden stated. In addition to your campaign contributions, you took an even more significant action, in my opinion. You were prepared to contribute your names, reputations, and personalities to the endeavor.
Biden stated that after he leaves office on January 20, he plans to continue to be involved in party politics. Additionally, he forecasted that Harris will continue to play a significant role in the party’s future.
Child, you’re not going anywhere. “We won’t allow you to,” Biden told Harris.
