Andy Kotelnicki, the offensive coordinator, hinted on social media Monday night that he intends to remain with Penn State going forward.
He posted on X that he was “incredibly fortunate to be a member of the Penn State Football Family.” There is still more to be done this season, and I am forward to see what our program will bring in 2025!
Since rumors circulated on December 2 that Kotelnicki had interviewed at West Virginia for the Mountaineers’ head coaching position, his employment status has been questioned. Despite going through the procedure, Kotelnicki will obviously stay in Happy Valley.
This offseason, the former offensive coordinator from Kansas arrived at Penn State promising to provide innovative and potent offensive play.
Kotelnicki’s team has an 11-2 record and a berth in the Big Ten Championship after scoring 33.2 points per game this season, which is good for 25th in the nation.
This year’s Penn State team has been more consistently explosive, even though the numbers represent a statistical drop from 36.2 points in 2023. In the regular season, the Lions produced 57 plays with 20 yards or more, up from 47 in 2023.
Another reason for Kotelnicki’s inclusion was his 37-point, 518-yard effort against No. 1 Oregon for the conference title.
For good cause, his work with tight end Tyler Warren, a Heisman candidate, and quarterback Drew Allar in particular has garnered national notice. He is also infamous for his trick plays. For example, during a Penn State run for Warren versus USC, the tight end caught a touchdown and snapped the ball.
Kotelnicki’s decision to remain with Penn State this time is not shocking, but if he continues to perform well with the Nittany Lions, head coaches will be interested in him.
Penn State’s focus shifts to its home College Football Playoff game in the first round, where it will face SMU, the No. 11 seed, as the sixth seed.
