Harrisburg International Airport does not typically offer nonstop flights to the West Coast, but on New Year’s Eve, American Airlines added a trip to Phoenix, Arizona.
The answer is as simple as two words: bowl game.
Fans of Penn State can take a nonstop flight from Harrisburg International Airport in Lower Swatara Township to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced that American Airlines will operate a nonstop trip from HIA to the airport on New Year’s Eve, with a return flight on New Year’s Day.Seats are restricted, according to airport officials, and reservations can be made at www.aa.com.
At 7:30 p.m. EST, Penn State will play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. On Saturday, SMU was trounced by the Nittany Lions 38–10.
There are 17 nonstop destinations from HIA, including seasonal trips, although none are on the West Coast. From HIA, American Airlines has nonstop service to Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Charlotte.
Football clubs from Division I and Division III have flown out of HIA this season.
Avflight has offered the following: a charter flight to the UCLA football team following their game against Penn State on October 5; a charter flight to Los Angeles International Airport for the Penn State football team’s game against USC on October 12; a charter flight to Seattle for the Washington football team after their game against Penn State on October 26; a charter flight for the Susquehanna University football team to Minneapolis and back after their victory over St. John’s University on December 7; a charter flight for Bethel University’s playoff game against Susquehanna University on December 14 and to Chicago for Susquehanna University’s matchup against North Central College in the national semifinals.
Additionally, Avflight made it possible for SMU supporters and their band to book charter flights for the December 21 playoff matchup with Penn State.
Additionally, this year Delta Airlines expanded its service between Harrisburg and Minneapolis for fans attending the November 23 Penn State game and between Harrisburg and Seattle for Washington supporters attending the October 12 Penn State game.
