A Texas man was arrested on Saturday, September 14, after Indiana State Police (ISP) officers found 500 grams of Kratom during a routine traffic stop in Marion.
The suspect, Reuben D. Powell, a 35-year-old from Channelview, Texas, is now facing charges related to the possession and dealing of a controlled substance.
The Traffic Stop
Around 3 p.m., ISP Trooper Titus noticed signs of potential criminal activity when he pulled over Powell’s vehicle along Tippy Drive.
During the stop, the officer became suspicious of Powell’s behavior and called for backup. A Marion Police Department officer arrived with his K-9 partner to assist in the search. The K-9 detected the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, leading to a thorough search.
Kratom Discovered
During the search, authorities found approximately 500 grams of Kratom, a substance that can have sedative and psychological effects when consumed in large quantities. Kratom is a controlled substance in certain states, including Indiana, where it is illegal due to its potential for abuse.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies Kratom as having effects similar to opioids when taken in high doses, making it a dangerous substance in the eyes of law enforcement. Because of this, Powell is now facing serious legal consequences.
Arrest and Charges
Following the discovery, Powell was immediately arrested. He is now facing preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance and dealing in a controlled substance.
These charges can carry severe penalties, depending on the amount of the drug and intent to distribute. Kratom-related charges often come with heavy fines and potential jail time.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if Powell was part of a larger drug distribution operation or if he was transporting the Kratom for personal use.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Indiana law enforcement to crack down on drug-related crimes, particularly those involving controlled substances like Kratom.
Law Enforcement’s Stance on Kratom
Kratom has been a controversial substance in the U.S., with some people advocating for its benefits and others warning about its dangers. In Indiana, however, the law is clear: Kratom is classified as a controlled substance.
The state has taken a firm stance against the drug due to its addictive potential and health risks.
ISP Public Information Officer Steven Glass emphasized that traffic stops like these are vital in the fight against drug-related crime.
“Our officers are trained to detect signs of suspicious behavior during traffic stops, and in this case, it led to a significant drug bust,” said Glass.
