Shocking Highway 54 Pursuit: Jefferson City Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase

A Jefferson City man is now facing serious charges after leading local deputies on a high-speed chase along Highway 54. The suspect, Matthew McGuire, has been charged with three felonies following the incident that unfolded last Wednesday.

According to the authorities, McGuire is being charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated fleeing, and drug possession. He is currently being held in Cole County Jail without bond, awaiting his court date, which is yet to be scheduled.

According to the probable cause statement, the chase began when deputies clocked McGuire driving at an alarming speed of 124 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone on westbound Highway 54.

A Cole County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop McGuire by activating the vehicle’s overhead lights and siren. McGuire initially began to pull over near Cassidy Road, but instead of stopping, he suddenly sped away, initiating a dangerous high-speed pursuit.

McGuire continued to drive recklessly, this time on eastbound Highway 54, towards Jefferson City. During the chase, McGuire reached speeds of over 100 mph as he approached Route CC.

The deputies in pursuit were able to get ahead of McGuire’s vehicle and forced him to stop, bringing an end to the chase without further escalation.

Once stopped, deputies noticed the strong odor of alcohol coming from McGuire. When asked to submit to a breathalyzer test and a blood test, McGuire allegedly refused both.

As a result, the authorities obtained a search warrant to secure a blood sample from McGuire, although the probable cause statement does not disclose the results of his blood alcohol content.
