New York Man Gets 15 Years in Prison for Cyberstalking and Attempted Kidnapping of Charlotte Resident

A New York man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for cyberstalking a woman in Charlotte and attempting to kidnap her. Russell J. Martini, aged 47, was sentenced on Wednesday, marking the end of a troubling case involving harassment and threats that spanned several months.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Martini’s crimes began in April 2022 when he started sending threatening and harassing messages to a woman identified in court documents as “Jane Doe.”

Martini and Jane Doe had a prior connection, and she had previously obtained a protection order against him in New York. Despite this order, Martini continued his harassment after Jane Doe moved to Charlotte.

Martini used various communication methods to reach Jane Doe and her family, including texts, emails, and social media. His messages included disturbing threats and attempts to intimidate.

He even created a fake social media account in Jane Doe’s name, using a compromising photo of her as the profile picture. Martini threatened to publish explicit content if Jane Doe did not comply with his demands.

In May 2022, Martini’s harassment escalated to physical violence. He traveled to Charlotte, targeting Jane Doe at her apartment complex.

As Jane Doe walked up the stairs to her apartment, Martini attacked her, attempting to drag her to his car. Fortunately, a bystander intervened, and Martini fled the scene. After the attack, Martini continued to threaten Jane Doe through email.

Court records reveal that Martini has a history of similar behavior. In 2018, he was convicted of stalking another woman.

His latest conviction led to a 15-year prison sentence, reflecting his extensive criminal record and the severity of his actions. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr. emphasized the need to protect the public from Martini, citing his repeated violations of probation terms and ongoing threats.
