In a significant development in the legal world, the trial of a Jefferson City man charged with the murder of his girlfriend will now take place in Pulaski County.
This decision was made after Cole County Judge J. Hasbrouck Jacobs ruled to relocate the trial from its original venue.
Sergio Sayles, who is accused of killing his 22-year-old girlfriend, Jasmine King, in April 2023, was initially set to have his trial in Boone County.
However, in February 2024, Judge Jacobs decided that the trial needed to be moved to a different location due to various reasons, including possibly ensuring a fair trial.
The judge had previously indicated in May 2024 that a jury from Pulaski County would handle the case.
On Wednesday, Judge Jacobs confirmed this decision, ordering that the trial be officially moved to Pulaski County. This move is expected to impact how the trial is conducted and the local attention it garners.
Sergio Sayles faces multiple serious charges, including First Degree Murder, Armed Criminal Action, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Stalking, and Harassment.
These charges stem from the tragic death of Jasmine King, a young woman whose life was cut short in a violent incident last year.
The decision to move the trial to Pulaski County comes as part of a legal process aimed at ensuring justice is served. The change in venue is often made to avoid potential bias and to find a jury that can impartially weigh the evidence presented during the trial.
As the trial proceeds in Pulaski County, it will be closely watched by both local communities and legal experts.
