A 12-year-old from Texas has been identified as the culprit behind two false bomb threats that targeted schools in southwest Georgia.
The threats, which led to a swift response from local authorities and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), caused significant concern but were ultimately found to be hoaxes.
The investigation began on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, when Miller County Middle School staff discovered a message on the school’s Facebook account that claimed a bomb was planted on campus.
The Miller County Sheriff’s Office acted immediately, requesting assistance from the GBI. GBI bomb technicians were quickly dispatched to the school to conduct a thorough search. Fortunately, no dangerous devices or materials were found, and the situation was deemed safe.
The very next day, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, another bomb threat was made, this time targeting Spring Creek Charter Academy in Bainbridge, Georgia.
An email sent to a school administrator mirrored the previous day’s threat to Miller County. Again, local law enforcement quickly responded, and the GBI was called in for assistance.
After conducting a complete investigation, no bombs or dangerous materials were discovered on the premises.
Tracking Down the Culprit
The GBI’s intelligence team, working with local law enforcement, tracked the messages and conducted several interviews, which eventually led them to the suspect – a 12-year-old child living in Texas.
Although the juvenile has not traveled to Georgia recently, the authorities believe the threats were intended to cause panic within the schools.
There is no evidence to suggest that the suspect had any accomplices or that the threats posed an actual danger to students or staff.
After confirming the suspect’s identity, the GBI worked in coordination with Texas authorities. As a result, the juvenile will face charges in Texas for the bomb threats.
However, there is a possibility that additional charges may be filed if the investigation uncovers any further involvement from others.
Law Enforcement Response Praised
Local and state law enforcement agencies were praised for their quick response and coordination during the investigation.
The safety of students and staff was the top priority, and authorities took every measure to ensure the schools were secure before resuming normal activities.
