An unexpected discovery was made by a California stay-at-home father: the voice of the late King of Pop.
Gregg Musgrove, 56, discovered a set of unreleased Michael Jackson tapes in a San Fernando Valley storage facility.
All of this began when Musgrove received a call from a colleague regarding a storage unit he had recently bought in Van Nuys. The flat was once owned by singer and music producer Bryan Loren.
Twelve unreleased songs that the Rock With You vocalist worked on between 1989 and 1991—before the Dangerous album was released—are included on the recordings.
I’ve visited every fan site. Musgrove told The Hollywood Reporter that some of the tracks are rumored to exist and some have been slightly leaked. There aren’t even any couples in the planet.
In order to identify which tracks are available online and which have never been released, Musgrove created a comprehensive inventory list of the track releases along with teasers for unreleased songs.
Even more fascinating is the fact that at least a few songs feature Jackson and Loren talking about the recording and creative process on cassettes for roughly two minutes.
The fact that no one has ever heard this thing before gives me chills as I listen to it. “It was really, really cool to hear Michael Jackson actually talk and kind of joke back and forth,” he told the site.
However, Musgrove and his lawyer brought the unreleased tapes to the Jackson Estate earlier this year, so it’s unlikely that the public will ever hear the tunes.
For unspecified reasons, the estate, who Musgrove claims conducted their own investigation into the tapes, refused to buy them but did provide him with a formal statement declaring that the estate does not assert ownership.
The estate states in the letter that he and any other potential buyer of these unpublished cassettes do not possess the same copyright rights over the recordings and works as the estate.
Therefore, the tapes will never be made public.
As of Thursday, the unreleased tapes have been taken out of Musgrove’s possession and placed in a secure location under his lawyer’s management, despite his earlier plans to take them to the four major auction houses.
