A professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia has drawn criticism for remarks she made on social media endorsing Luigi Mangione, the main suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth.

According to 6ABC, Julia Alekseyev, an assistant professor of English and cinema and media studies, posted a video to TikTok on Monday that read, “I have never been prouder to be a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.”

According to USA Today, Alekseyeva described Mangione as an icon that we all need and deserve in a different Instagram Story.

Mangione, 26, graduated from college in 2020. He is currently battling extradition to New York after being apprehended on Monday at an Altoona McDonald’s.

Alekseyeva apologized on X the next day, writing, “I uploaded a TikTok and other stories to my Instagram late yesterday night. I absolutely retract these since they were inappropriate and hurtful. I truly apologize for any hurt the posts may have caused, and I do not support violence.”

According to NBC10, she has also made her Instagram account private and removed her TikTok account.

Jeffrey Kallberg, the school’s deputy dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, told news outlets that recent social media statements claiming to be from Assistant Professor Julia Alekseyeva caused a great deal of anxiety. Her remarks about the shooting of Brian Thompson in New York City were not supported by the University of Pennsylvania or the School of Arts and Sciences since they were incompatible with their respective ideals. Assistant Professor Alekseyeva has retracted the remarks after acknowledging that they were incorrect and offensive. We appreciate this update and apologize for any disappointment or worry this may have caused.
