Despite beginning 2024 with a dismal financial outlook, Harrisburg’s Broad Street Market is concluding the year on a high note.

In contrast to the $14,000 operating budget it began with earlier this year, the market’s governing board, the Broad Street Market Alliance, approved a $513,524 budget for 2025 on Wednesday.

The 2025 budget allots roughly $100,000 in state funds for the Stone Building market’s restorations and enhancements, and it does not raise vendor rent.

In addition, a new, full-time market manager must be hired to take Tanis Monroy’s place, who departed the market earlier this year as executive director.

Police claimed that Monroy stole almost $17,000 from the market by creating fictitious checks, using a corporate credit card for personal needs, and accepting incentives without authorization. As a result, he was charged with two felonies.

According to the board, a job application will be made available shortly.

The budget also reinstates paid advertising, which the board temporarily stopped last year in order to save money, and for the first time in years, it addresses the need for preventative maintenance.

In 2026, the market should have roughly $100,000 in operating fund balance, according to the board, just in time for the anticipated reopening of the Brick Building. In July 2023, a fire severely destroyed the building.

Board chair Eric Hagarty claimed in a letter released in November that the market’s redesigned board, in collaboration with suppliers, utility companies, vendors, and community members, starved off debt.

According to him, the budget was stabilized by a $350,000 state grant, a 25% voluntary increase in vendor rent, and board members acting as market managers. The Stone Building’s operating costs, roof repairs, and HVAC renovations are covered by the Department of Community and Economic Development grant.
