There seems to be a problem with Penn State supporters’ College Football Playoff tickets.
Since season tickets went on sale Monday, a few students and season ticket holders have expressed on social media that they were unable to cash in on their prior Beaver Stadium seat reservations.
Before the Nittany Lions’ home game was finalized in November, Penn State emailed season ticket holders and students to let them make reservations in advance.
Students had to purchase a $28 ticket and enter a lottery, much like Penn State does during the regular season. Regular seats could be reserved by season ticket holders for a variety of prices.
Fans have claimed that their ticket requests were turned down or that they never got an email confirming their first request, even though Penn State is officially hosting SMU on December 21. According to PennLive, at least one student did not initially receive tickets but did so after contacting Ticketmaster.
Some Beaver Stadium areas that were previously only accessible to students are now open to the general public when trying to buy tickets for the game on Ticketmaster. For instance, seats in section SJ range in price from $160 to $337.
All student ticket allocations, however, were fulfilled, according to a statement from Penn State.
A spokeswoman stated that the CFP controls the ticket quantity and pricing. No student requests were denied before the deadline of Friday, November 29. All students who submitted ticket requests by that date were granted tickets.
When PennLive asked if the student section, which normally accommodates around 21,000 people, had been scaled back for the playoff game, Penn State did not immediately reply. Penn State described the initial ticket reservation procedure in a subsequent email on Tuesday.
With a home field advantage that is unmatched, we are thrilled to host a CFP game in front of our incredible supporters. Following the announcement of the CFP First Round home game, we gave our season ticket holders the first dibs on their season seats and a presale to purchase extra single-game tickets. On Monday, the seats that season ticket holders had not bought were put up for public sale.
Fans received emails with instructions on how to pay their debts and pick up their tickets. The tickets were not reserved if the procedure was not completed.
Similarly, an email inviting all Penn State students, including those at Commonwealth campuses, to reserve tickets in Beaver Stadium’s student section was sent to them. Every student who submitted a ticket request before the deadline had their request honored, and they were issued tickets. The email confirmation states that on December 19, student tickets would be accessible in Penn State Student Account Manager.
Following the completion of the student ticket process, the unclaimed tickets were offered for sale to the general public at the CFP-determined pricing.
PennLive was informed by a CFP ticketing agent on the phone Tuesday that inquiries about the ticket reservation procedure should be sent to Penn State. The same thing was stated by a Ticketmaster agent, who also mentioned that the institution would need to be contacted over the quantity of student tickets sold.
On December 21, the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions will play the eleventh-seeded Mustangs at noon on TNT.
