In an attempt to apprehend an armed individual suspected of the most recent murder, Harrisburg police closed a key roadway on Tuesday.
Officers have closed Cameron Street between Herr and Maclay streets.
Just after 10:30 a.m., emergency personnel were sent to the scene, according to dispatchers.
According to police, the standoff started when the designated suspect in a killing on Sunday night was stopped on the highway.
In relation to the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Jhonny Torreson on the 300 block of Nectarine Street, 29-year-old Santiago Gutierrez was charged with murder on Monday.
Fran Chardo, the district attorney for Dauphin County, said that when police pulled over the cab of a tractor trailer, they recognized Gutierrez as the driver. According to officers, there has been firing at the location and Gutierrez brandished a gun at them.
No one is known to be harmed. There is a tactical team present. According to the police, Gutierrez is the only one in the truck.
Ephrata resident Eric Mendenhall was at a scale house on Cameron Street picking up refrigerators when he heard a gunshot and witnessed a tractor-trailer colliding with two police cruisers. He then heard the officers shouting, “Hands up, hands up!”
He added that he makes this trip once or twice a month for work. “I just picked up the refrigerators and left,” he said.
He claimed that following the initial shot, they began shooting wildly. It had the sound of the first day of rifle season. It was crazy.
Harrisburg police provided the following description of the murder in an affidavit of probable cause:
When he went to see a relative who lives on the 300 block of Nectarine Street, an alley off of Swatara Street, on Sunday night, a witness told police that his companion, whom he named as Gutierrez, rode with him.
According to court documents, Gutierrez resides in Carlisle.
Gutierrez remained outside in the car, parked in the center of the alley, while the witness went inside his relative’s house. Gutierrez was waiting outside when Torres came up to him. According to court filings, the witness told police that Torres and Gutierrez were the only people in the lane at the time.
Torres and Gutierrez got into a heated disagreement, and Torres turned to leave. According to the affidavit, Gutierrez shot him at least once in the head while he was doing so. According to court records, Gutierrez left the scene of the shooting.
According to court documents, Gutierrez was charged with a guns violation in addition to homicide since he does not have a Pennsylvania gun license.
