According to dispatch, firefighters are on the scene of a fire that broke out inside a former Harrisburg State Hospital building Monday night.

According to Dauphin County dispatch, firefighters were sent to the Harrisburg State Hospital, better known as the Cherrywood building in Susquehanna Township, at 10:42 p.m. on the 40th block of Beech Drive.

On Facebook, locals reported that the structure was collapsing due to the fire.

As part of a proposal to repurpose the grounds for the $450 million joint laboratory facility of the Pennsylvania Department of General Services, the former state hospital closed and the majority of the buildings, including Cherrywood, are scheduled to be razed. Early 2025 is when site preparation work is expected to start.

What caused the fire to ignite is unknown.
