Tyler Warren was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, and Penn State worked hard to bring him to New York.

Those hopes were crushed Monday night.

The prize, which is given annually to the best player in the country, did not include Warren among its four candidates. The final four were Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, and Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter.

Week after week, he has done it. At the end of the season, James Franklin remarked, “He’s a big-time player, and he’s doing it when all eyes are on him and he’s the focus of the game plan.” He is a unique individual.

This season, Warren has caught 88 passes for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns.Warren has also performed admirably when used in gadget plays by offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki; the Virginia native has 23 rushes for 191 yards and seven touchdowns. For 35 yards and a touchdown, he has completed three of five passes.

This season, he was selected the conference’s outstanding tight end and to the first team of the All-Big Ten.Warren is also a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award, which honors the nation’s most versatile player, and the Mackey Award, which honors the country’s best tight end.

Warren has shattered several records this season, including the Penn State record for most yards and receiving touchdowns by a tight end. He broke the Nittany Lions tight end single-season marks for both yards and receptions.
