The last time the Cleveland Browns swept the Pittsburgh Steelers, Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America was the number one film in the US, and George Michael’s Faith was a top-charting success.
The Browns had an opportunity to end the streak on Sunday, 36 years after they swept the Steelers in 1988. The Steelers’ 27-14 victory, however, ended that run for Pittsburgh. No NFL coach has a better lifetime record versus a single opponent among divisional opponents than head coach Mike Tomlin, who has the highest winning % against the Browns of any coach.
It’s a tremendously incredible run of dominance, even when the Browns struggled in the 2000s. Though 2024 has resembled those gloomy years of the 2000s and early 2010s more than the early 2020s, when the Browns clawed their way out of obscurity, their newfound significance is essentially a recent phenomena.
With the victory, the Steelers also extended their run and eliminated the Browns from playoff contention. They lead the AFC North by two games and are 10-3.
