Charles Huff, the head coach at Marshall, has changed positions once more. He was James Franklin’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Penn State for four years.
Huff, who guided Marshall to a Sun Belt title this season, was hired by Southern Miss, the school announced on Sunday.Pete Thamel of ESPN reports that the contract has a four-year term with a one-year rollover.
Despite being in the last season of his Marshall contract, Huff was a standout player, helping the Thundering Herd to a conference title game victory over Louisiana 31-3 and an 8-1 Sun Belt record (10-3 overall).
Huff, who is from Denton, Maryland, played a key role in Penn State’s recruiting and success of current Philadelphia Eagles standout Saquon Barkley. At Alabama, he also worked under Nick Saban.
Ironically, Southern Miss had a 1-11 record and no conference victories this season, placing them worst in the Sun Belt. Huff finished 32–20 during his Marshall career, and his team qualified for the bowl in each of the four 2021–2024 seasons.
