Jeff Costello will soon add the title of head football coach to his more than thirty years on the Mechanicsburg sidelines.
Costello is the recommended choice for board approval on December 17, according to a brief statement released by Northern York officials on Thursday.

“Coach Costello is an excellent choice to lead our Polar Bear football program because of his vast experience, love of football, and commitment to helping student-athletes grow,” stated Angie Gaido, Director of Athletics at Northern York.
As we start this exciting new chapter for Polar Bear football, I’m excited to watch the great effects he will have on our players, families, and community.
Since 1993, Costello has served as an assistant coach at Mechanicsburg.
In those 31 seasons, he has overseen almost every position. In 2024, he was the assistant head coach and special teams coach for the Wildcats.
After winning 11 straight games, Mechanicsburg (11-1) lost to Bishop McDevitt, a 5A finalist, in the District 3 semifinals.
I simply dreamed of becoming a head coach. Costello stated on Thursday, “I just decided that I needed to take a chance on myself after our season ended against McDevitt.”
I thought the Northern job was a perfect fit. I made the decision to put my name forward. Many of my closest friends are from the Dillsburg region.
After nine seasons and six postseason appearances, veteran coach Bill Miller was fired in November and will be replaced by Costello.
“I’m really thrilled about the chance Northern has given me,” Costello remarked.
