On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that cornerback Cory Trice has been activated from injured reserve. Since Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Trice has been sidelined due to a hamstring issue. Prior to his injury, Trice played as a gunner and was the best backup outside cornerback. It’s unclear how the team will split the work because James Pierre now fills both of those positions.
In Week 2, Trice recorded his first interception against the Denver Broncos. Trice, who was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Purdue, missed his entire rookie season due to an ACL tear sustained during his first training camp.
Trice has performed admirably since rejoining the team this year. His most recent setback was a hamstring issue, but the Steelers have always been intrigued by his potential if he can maintain his health for the entire season.
Head coach Mike Tomlin dubbed Trice and Joey Porter Jr. one-half of the Avatar cornerbacks. Trice’s talent was evident throughout training camp, and his impressive start to the season only served to confirm that.
He will want to establish a position for himself now that he is back, but there is no assurance that he will be given a helmet immediately.
