When villagers found four Huskies that appeared to have been abandoned the day before, a sincere Facebook plea on October 25, 2024, set off an amazing communal initiative.
They had no idea that this was only the start of an incredible journey. The rescuers quickly learned that the situation was far worse—eight huskies were in need, with one dog in critical condition and another missing from the herd.
Their safety was in jeopardy as these lovely canines were abandoned in the cold without food, water, or shelter. Devoted to gaining the trust of the dogs and carefully trapping them, a team of caring people risked icy temperatures and crossed waterways for many hours. Seven of the eight Huskies have now found safety and warmth with devoted fosters or adopters thanks to their tireless efforts and a variety of trapping methods.
One of the Huskies—she would eventually be called Sage—was critically injured and had a dangerously high fever (more than 105 degrees). She was rescued from the verge of septic shock by prompt medical attention. Along with a number of other necessary reforms, we have joined forces with state lawmakers to support Sage’s Bill, which would make animal dumping a felony in Pennsylvania.
One more Husky is still confused and afraid as Sage and her six friends adjust to their new life. Even though the start of hunting season has made her more elusive, the committed rescuers are trying nonstop to capture her. Given how urgently these dogs need to be vaccinated and spayed/neutered, community support is more important than ever.
We have started a GoFundMe campaign: https://gofund.me/82753436 to lessen the financial load on their amazing fosters and adopters who volunteered despite not intending to add a furry family member. For Missy Hunsberger’s Husky Fund care, donations can also be given directly to Sunbury Animal Hospital.
Finding the final missing husky is just one of the main objectives; another is to learn more about the people behind this tragic act of neglect. Please contact your local dog warden or get in touch with the Northumberland County Dog Warden, who is in charge of the inquiry, if you have any leads.
Lastly, we’re thrilled about Sage’s Bill’s long-term ambition. We’ve had fruitful discussions with state senator Lynda Schlegel Culver and state representative Michael Stender to push for significant legislative improvements that will shield all animals from future cruel abandonment.
Let’s work together to make sure that no animal ever has to experience this kind of anxiety and pain again.
Missy Dornsife resides in Dornsife, Pennsylvania, while Mikki Anselmo resides in Northumberland. They assisted in saving the stray Huskies since they love animals.
