At 12:58 a.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service issued an updated weather notice for Somerset, Cambria, and Clearfield counties, predicting heavy snowfall through 2 a.m.

“At 12:57 a.m., a band of heavy snow was along a line extending from 16 miles southeast of Punxsutawney to 11 miles east of Waynesburg and moving east at 45 MPH,” according to the National Weather Service.

Johnstown, Somerset, Windber, Ebensburg, Belmont, Portage, Northern Cambria, Curwensville, Geistown, Meyersdale, Patton, Cresson, Gallitzin, and Loretto are among the places affected by the alert. For drivers on Interstate 80, this comprises the region between the Woodland and Kylertown exits; in particular, the Pennsylvania Turnpike from mile markers 101 to 130 is located close to mile marker 132.

“If you have to travel into or through this band of heavy snow, exercise extra caution,” the weather service cautions. Accidents may result from abrupt changes in visibility and perhaps slick roads.

United Robots offers a service called Advance Local Weather Alerts that gathers the most recent information from the National Weather Service using machine learning.
