On Wednesday, the appeal of suspended Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair will be heard by appeals officer Ramon Foster, a former offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Foster was chosen to review the play by the NFLPA and the NFL.
After Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars dropped to give up on the play, Al-Shaair struck him in the head with a forearm shiver, earning him a suspension. During the play, Lawrence sustained a concussion.
Following the play, both sides got into a fight as a result of Al-Shaair’s hit. After being dismissed from the game, Al-Shaair attempted to brawl with Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff as he was being led off the field.
Al-Shaair expressed regret and that he never meant to hurt Lawrence. He filed an appeal against the NFL’s three-game suspension. In a statement, Jon Runyan, who imposed the ban, chastised Al-Shaair.
Runyan said, “It is concerning and does not reflect the core values of the NFL that you lack sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it.”
The remark and ban were strongly opposed by the Texans. Al-Shaair may have an advantage when he attempts to challenge the punishment because he has never before been fined or suspended.
As a member of the 2010 offensive line, Foster spent ten years with the Steelers. An undrafted free agent, Foster worked his way onto the team’s roster and finally assumed a starting position that he would hold until his retirement.
