Pittsburgh –Calvin Austin III, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, may miss the team’s game against the Cleveland Browns due to his concussion protocol. Austin’s return to practice will depend on how quickly he completes all of the protocol stages, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. Since traumatic brain injuries are unpredictable, Austin might not miss a game at all or he might miss several weeks.
Throughout the day, Austin took two impacts that crushed his bones. The first occurred when linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither committed offensive pass interference on the Steelers’ first offensive play from scrimmage. Austin lost his breath after being struck in the chest.
Austin was hurt by the second blow, though. On an out route, Cam Taylor-Britt, the cornerback for the Bengals, struck him just beneath the chin. After being diagnosed with a concussion, Austin entered the locker room and never came out.
The Steelers used Mike Williams, Ben Skowronek, and Van Jefferson in alternating rotations for the remainder of the game to cover Austin’s absence. Though it’s unclear who the Steelers would have replaced Austin as the punt returner with Scotty Miller as a gameday inactive, Austin would have left a vacuum as well.
