The Food and Drug Administration has voluntarily recalled more than 10,000 units of eggs farmed in Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture.
The company that supplied the eggs, Handsome Brook Farms, issued a statement on November 27 indicating that the eggs may be salmonella-contaminated.
For youngsters, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, salmonella can result in serious health problems.
According to the statement, healthy individuals infected with Salmonella frequently suffer from fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and stomach pain. Rarely, a Salmonella infection may cause the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious conditions such arthritis, endocarditis, and arterial infections (also known as infected aneurysms).
Starting on Nov. 22, these eggs were shipped to 25 Costco locations in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee.
The 24-count eggs with UPC 9661910680 that were reared on organic pasture come in a plastic egg carton. Only products bearing the Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025, are subject to the recall.
After the company discovered that eggs not meant for retail distribution were packaged and delivered instead, the recall was started. According to the FDA, the company has since implemented additional supply chain safeguards to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
The recall is being carried out in accordance with FDA regulations, and no complaints of illness have been documented.
Handsome Brook Farms advises customers who think they may have been impacted by this to cease using the product, return the carton or cartons to their neighborhood Costco for a refund, or throw away the eggs.
