A new head coach is being sought by West Virginia. Additionally, it has been suggested that a Penn State assistant coach may be considered for the Mountaineers’ job.

According to a source from West Virginia Sports Now, Andy Kotelnicki, the offensive coordinator for Penn State, anticipates interviewing for the head coaching position at West Virginia.

Neal Brown’s termination was announced by West Virginia on Sunday. Over six seasons, Brown’s record was 37-35. His Mountaineers never made it into the top 25 of the Associated Press.

James Franklin appointed Kotelnicki as offensive coordinator at Penn State prior to the 2024 campaign. After last year’s Michigan loss, Mike Yurcich was fired, thus Kotelnicki left Kansas to take his place.

Kotelnicki had a reputation for being creative and coming up with big plays when he arrived at Penn State. He has contributed to the Nittany Lions’ 11-1 record by using a variety of formations, pre-snap motions, and inventive play-calls. Under his guidance, quarterback Drew Allar has developed, and his use of Tyler Warren has made him the tight end in the Heisman Trophy discussion.

Notably, Kotelnicki’s offense scored 34 points and amassed 457 yards in a season-opening victory over West Virginia on August 31 in his first game calling plays for Penn State.

It was anticipated that Kotelnicki, 43, would eventually attract head coaching interest. And it’s likely that his name will continue to appear on the coaching carousel.

On Saturday, Kotelnicki and the Nittany Lions will take on Oregon in the Big Ten championship game. Penn State will then depart for the College Football Playoffs.
