According to CBS Sports expert Jonathan Jones, the Pittsburgh Steelers would prefer to re-sign Russell Wilson and Justin Fields over the offseason if possible. Although both players are expected to start next season, Jones believes Pittsburgh enjoys the combination of quarterbacks they have.
Jones stated, “The Steelers want to keep both Justin Fields and Russ, but you have to think they’re only going to be able to keep one.” According to a number of executives I surveyed, Russ’s next deal may be in the high twenties or low thirties, or millions.
In his six starts this season with the Steelers, Wilson has performed admirably. Fields has also been designated as a starter by the team on several occasions. Indeed, both guys have the potential to be franchise quarterbacks, according to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The Fields package was created for this reason.
The Steelers’ desire to retain both players is therefore not surprising, but it does appear likely that they will lose one of them, and given the current situation, Fields would probably be that guy. Pittsburgh will have to pay at least one quarterback in any case.
