The Pittsburgh Steelers’ trade of cornerback Donte Jackson to the Carolina Panthers for Diontae Johnson was not well received in Pittsburgh. Throughout his career, Jackson had battled injuries, and even when he did play, he didn’t appear to be the top cornerback the Panthers had hoped for. Jackson would not, however, be expected to play as the Steelers’ only cornerback.

As it happens, that may have been one of the motivating factors Jackson need. Jackson has developed into a ballhawk in a defense that fits his skill set fairly nicely. In their victory over the Bengals yesterday, he recorded his fifth interceptions, bringing his total to a career-high five.

Despite battling hamstring and shoulder problems, Jackson has managed to stay healthy enough to participate in every game this season. Nevertheless, he has contributed a seasoned presence to a young cornerback room, and his play has been more than enough for his position.

Even while there are certain faults, the Steelers’ defense has stabilized enough thanks to his good fit with the culture.

We put in a lot of effort every single day, man,” Jackson remarked. We’re working hard and pushing one another. When we meet, we exchange questions. We’re getting together every day to continue improving and moving up the ranks. The possibilities are truly endless.

In retrospect, Johnson only played eight games in Carolina during the March deal. Jackson, meanwhile, has emerged as a key player in the Steelers’ secondary as they contend for the postseason and dominate the AFC North.

Johnson is now on the Baltimore Ravens and has little to no role, having played zero snaps last week. The Steelers took a leap on this deal when it first happened, but it sure looks like they won the trade.
