As more than 3 million people were checked by airport officials on Sunday, travelers returning home after the Thanksgiving holiday established a record.
On Monday, the Transportation Security Administration reported that it processed 3.09 million passengers, or 74,000 more than the previous record. On July 7, a Sunday following a holiday, that milestone was established.
Flights for hundreds of thousands of passengers were canceled or delayed. According to FlightAware, about 6,800 flights were delayed and approximately 120 planes in the United States were canceled, which is not an abnormally high figure. Chicago’s O Hare International Airport and Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport saw the most delays.
In line with a trend of record travel in 2024, the TSA had projected that air traffic over Thanksgiving week would increase by 6% compared to the same days the previous year.
