Note: The majority of the layoffs will occur on January 17, 2025, according to an update to this report.

Some workers at a large corporation may not be having a happy Christmas.

Boeing has revealed that 2,192 workers will be let go on January 17. Five days before Christmas, on December 20, seven further employees will be let go.

2,200 notifications of layoffs have been sent out, with most of the layoffs occurring in Washington. In addition to an unspecified number sent to Oregon and Missouri, another 220 were sent to their facility in South Carolina. Boeing manufactures commercial aircraft in both South Carolina and Washington.

The layoff applications follow Boeing’s announcement on October 11 that it will decrease 17,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, to cut costs during an eight-week strike by its machine workers.

The information was included in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining (WARN) notification that was submitted to the Employment Security Department of Washington State.

Kelly Ortberg, the company’s CEO, informed staff that the personnel numbers needed to be adjusted to reflect the company’s financial situation.

More than 400 members of Boeing’s professional aerospace workers union received letters of layoffs earlier this month. Members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, were given the pink slips at that time. The employees will continue to be paid until the middle of January.

The Boeing firm claims that qualified workers will receive subsidized health care coverage, career transition services, and severance pay for up to three months following their departure.

Additionally, the corporation stated that attrition and focusing backfills for unfilled positions on business-critical goals are part of these layoffs.
