After noticing concrete deterioration, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) closed the pedestrian underpass beneath Cameron Street by the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.
The news was made Monday afternoon after PennDOT officials reported discovering damage to the underground walkway’s roof over the weekend.
They indicated there will be a temporary restriction on access to the corridor. According to the press release, PennDOT intends to erect temporary shielding and supports at strategic points throughout the tunnel, which will be in place until the underpass’s repairs start later this year.
PennDOT is now carrying out a pavement preservation project on Cameron Street and Arsenal Boulevard in Harrisburg and Susquehanna Township, which includes the closure.
According to PennDOT, there is an alternate pedestrian crossing north of the tunnel at the intersection of Azalea Drive and Farm Show Drive. The location also has crosswalks with pedestrian signal heads.
Additionally, according to PennDOT, until the repairs are finished, the left turn lane from westbound Cameron Street into the Farm Show Complex at Farm Show Drive remains closed.
The turn lane is situated just above the impacted section of the tunnel, officials added, necessitating the further closure.
It is projected that the $8 million project will be finished by September 2026.
The contractor is JD Eckman, Inc., located in Atglen, Pennsylvania.
There will be updates on the project’s various development phases, including any associated traffic consequences. PennDOT advised motorists to exercise caution and stay vigilant when driving through the work zone.
