alongside inside linebacker coach Aaron Curry departing to take a coaching position alongside Aaron Glenn at the New York Jets, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a coaching opening. The Steelers now have an opportunity to make an impression here, even though Curry appears to be a youthful, up-and-coming coach.
Jerod Mayo, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, could be the Steelers’ biggest acquisition. Mayo was a great linebackers coach with the Patriots before being promoted directly to head coach, but he does not now have a position after being fired by the team. It is unclear what he would be seeking for.
Since Mayo is a big drop off, the idea of bringing him in is, to be honest, a little crazy, but this may be a similar arrangement to how the Steelers aided Brian Flores. He took on the roles of linebackers coach and senior defensive assistant, and Mayo is undoubtedly suited for both positions.
In that position, Mayo would probably be quickly returning to his previous position as defensive coordinator, which is exactly what he needs after such a dismal first season in New England as head coach.
Additionally, Mayo and Mike Tomlin already had a relationship, so that might be a factor in this happening.
