MOBILE, ALThe Pittsburgh Steelers are aware of their quarterbacking needs. The Steelers may try to draft a quarterback at some time in addition to trying to sign one of Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, as team president Art Rooney II made clear on Monday.
The quarterback in 2025 will probably be subpar, which is the problem with that plan. Even though Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are at the top of the group, players like Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and Caleb Williams would have been at the top a year ago.
They have Jalen Milroe and Jaxon Dart, who are probably going to be among the top five quarterbacks in this year’s class, in the Senior Bowl. But even Ward and Sanders would have been competing for the seventh quarterback spot a year ago, according to Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy’s conversations with teams.
Even though there is some depth to it, it does not seem likely that the Steelers will select a quarterback in the first round as a result.
“Definitely not last year. Nagy remarked, “I don’t know if any of these guys would have made the top six last year.”
The Steelers are now in a difficult situation. Because of the paucity of skill in this class, a quarterback like Sanders or Ward will likely be pushed up the board, even if they like someone like Milroe, Dart, or another player.
Even in an aggressive trade-up scenario, the Steelers will be fortunate to have a chance at either of those guys. They are left in a difficult situation, and it appears that the Steelers will likely turn to Justin Fields or Russell Wilson to cover for them for the upcoming campaign.
