This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to attempt to extend outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Art Rooney II, the team’s president, stated that he wanted to sign Watt for a longer term beyond 2025, which was the final year of his 2021 deal. Watt, who is still among the NFL’s top players at the age of 30, is probably going to search for another big contract.
We should look into that this offseason, in my opinion. Regarding Watt, Rooney stated, “I hope we can have T.J. here for the future beyond this year because he has been one of the defense’s foundations for a number of years now.”
Watt’s career had a poor year; he recorded 11.5 sacks but struggled in the last month of the season. Watt’s declining output is a major factor in his loss as the favorite to earn Defensive Player of the Year, even though he struggled with injuries.
He promised to alter his game after the season, which included switching up his formation and incorporating fresh tactics.
“I think it’s been a difficult year in terms of how offenses plan to try to get me out of the game,” Watt stated. I’m going to have a major breakdown trying to figure out how to make plays. I’m not at all trying to justify myself. I want to perform. I have to figure out how to keep winning at games like chips and slides. This offseason, I’m going to put in a ton of effort to resolve that.
After the 2025 season, Watt will be a free agency, but if these remarks are any indication, he will probably be set up with a contract this year. Watt’s new game will emerge when that does, and the Steelers must see it if they want him to continue playing at an elite level as he approaches his 30s.
