It doesn’t seem like Najee Harris will be able to rejoin the Pittsburgh Steelers when he becomes a free agency. Harris is among the top choices for teams in a thin running back free-agency crop after the Steelers rejected his fifth-year option.
The Denver Broncos are one team that might be interested in a running back. The Broncos need to add some running back talent because Javonte Williams is going and won’t be playing well in 2024. Harris might be that person.
“Phillip Lindsay was the last 1,000-yard rusher the Broncos had in 2019.” Maurice Jones-Drew, a former NFL running back, wrote. In contrast, Harris joined Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson as the third player in the last 20 seasons to reach the 1,000-point milestone in each of his first four NFL seasons. During his first two seasons in Denver, Sean Payton’s offense has steadily developed, and with Bo Nix at quarterback, the future appears bright. Now, a run game is lacking. A strong, downhill rusher, Harris routinely breaks tackles. Payton (and Nix) would be happy to have a back like that.
During those four years, Harris participated in every game and established himself as the Steelers’ bulwark of health and reliability despite some challenging years. His effectiveness, however, never materialized, largely because of poor offensive line play and strategy that didn’t improve over the course of the term.
Due to concerns about Harris’ compatibility with the offensive plan Arthur Smith would be bringing over from Atlanta, the Steelers rejected his fifth-year option in May.
