Reuniting with an old buddy could help the Pittsburgh Steelers deal with some of their difficult quarterback issue. If the Steelers elect to bring back Justin Fields, quarterback Mason Rudolphas is a potential backup quarterback, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette insider Gerry Dulac.

Due to quarterback Will Levis’ troubles, Rudolph played in eight games and started five of them during the Titans’ season in Tennessee. He is now a free agent. He finished with nine touchdowns, nine interceptions, and 1530 throwing yards.

“The former quarterback for the New York Giants, Daniel Jones, would be the ideal acquisition. And would Mason Rudolph and the Steelers consider getting back together again?” Dulac wrote.

Since the end of the season, Dulac has made it clear that the Steelers’ likely strategy is to reinstate Fields as the starting quarterback and add a seasoned backup who can go in and offer security in the event that Fields is injured.

Before leaving to join the Titans, Rudolph had spent six seasons with the Steelers. One of the most successful offensive runs the Steelers have had in the 2020s is highlighted by his 3-0 run to send the team into the playoffs at the end of the 2023 season.

Since the Steelers are aware of his reaction to situations and his ability to add subtle depth behind Fields, his return may be one of security.
