OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Calvin Jones, who passed away, was a member of the Green Bay Packers when they won the Super Bowl following the 1996 season and ran for over 3,000 yards in three seasons at Nebraska. His age was 54.

According to police, Jones’ body was discovered on Wednesday night in a north Omaha home’s basement. A cause of death has not been established by police while an autopsy is conducted.

Jones’s companion Jo Dusatko informed the Omaha World-Herald that they suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. She claimed that Jones was using a generator in the basement since the home’s furnace was broken.

Prior to attending Nebraska, where he ran for 3,166 yards and 40 touchdowns and was selected as an All-Big Eight player in 1992–1993, Jones was an All-American at Central High School.

In 1991, Jones was the backup to Derek Brown, who formed the tandem known as the We-Backs, a reference to the Cornhuskers I-back position. In a 59-23 victory over Kansas that season, Jones broke out with 27 runs for a Big Eight freshman-record 294 yards and a school-record six touchdowns. He is ranked second on the Nebraska single-game running chart with his total versus the Jayhawks.

In 1994, Jones entered the NFL draft and was selected by the Raiders in the third round. During his two seasons with the Raiders, he played in 15 games and finished with 27 carries for 112 yards and two catches for 6 yards. In 1996, he made one appearance for the Packers but did not receive any carries.
