Despite the struggles outside of George Pickens, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver group had at least one bright spot. Calvin Austin III, a third-year wide receiver, began to make an impression. In addition to recording 548 yards and four scores, he was a strong punt returner and set a career best in receptions, touchdowns, and receiving yards.
Russell Wilson, Austin’s quarterback, lauded him on the Pat McAfee Show for being the star of the Steelers’ offense, which isn’t being discussed nearly enough.
“It’s always more enjoyable when you have playmakers around,” Wilson said. George Pickens is an absolute freak. I believed Pat Freiermuth had an excellent year. Calvin Austin was, in my opinion, the season’s biggest star. His rise and his diligence. In a sense, they folks let you cook.
Austin’s debut season was cut short due to a lisfranc injury. He was the fourth receiver to occasionally downfield in his second season, although he appeared a step slower than his Memphis counterpart. In his third season, everything finally came together.
Austin now anticipates a contract year and wants to once more play a significant role in the Steelers’ passing game.
