The National Weather Service issued an updated extreme cold warning for Cambria and Somerset counties on Monday at 3:34 p.m., which is in effect from 7 p.m. until Wednesday lunchtime.
“Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 24 below expected,” according to the weather agency.
“In as little as 30 minutes, exposed skin might get frostbite from the extremely cold wind, which can reach 25 degrees below zero. Failure to take precautions can result in hypothermia and frostbite. According to the weather service, exposing exposed skin to these temperatures will result in frostbite and hypothermia. “Until conditions improve, people are advised to remain indoors. Wear layers if you must go outside. A bulky coat won’t keep you as warm as multiple layers of clothing. To lower the risk of hypothermia or frostbite, cover any exposed skin. Wearing a hat, scarf, and gloves will prevent you from losing body heat. Be careful when you’re outside. Put on gloves, a hat, and suitable attire.
