Washington The Washington Capitals defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-0 on Tuesday night, and Logan Thompson recorded his first shutout of the season by stopping all 19 shots he faced.
Thompson earned two consecutive starts and played in his third straight game since Charlie Lindgren’s injury. He improved to 19-2-3 since joining the Capitals by making a number of crucial saves and a few saves on good scoring opportunities.
The Capitals, who have won two straight after splitting wins and losses in their last nine games since December 23, also had goals from Brandon Duhaime, John Carlson, and Ethen Frank.
Duhaime picked up a secondary assist on Frank’s second goal in three NHL games since being called up from the minor leagues, and he scored when the puck rebounded in off the back of his right skate.
For the fifth time in seven games, Anaheim lost despite 22 saves from John Gibson.
Takeaways
Ducks: They are still close to the basement of the Western Conference after failing to maintain the momentum after their 3-2 overtime victory at Carolina on Sunday.
Capitals: When Lindgren is not available, Thompson can take over. It helps that there aren’t any back-to-backs until late February.
Key moment
Jakob Chychrun put the Capitals ahead 1-0 after a dominant start in which they had the puck in the attacking zone for extended periods of time. Chychrun did this by deflecting his shot off Duhaime and into the net.
Key stat
In his first three NHL games, Frank has scored a point, making him the sixth player in the team’s history to do so. The most recent to do it was Alex Ovechkin, who did it in his first eight games in 2005–06.
